From Posters to Product: My UI Design Evolution

What began as designing free thumbnails for friends during my post-board holidays turned into creating massive college banners. Here is how I upgraded my curiosity into a passion for Web UI design.

Every designer remembers their first canvas. Mine was the empty time right after my board exams.

While waiting for the next chapter of my life to start, I began exploring design. It started simply with YouTube thumbnails, but that was exactly where my curiosity peaked and my design thinking truly began.

I became a freelance designer for my friends. The cost? Absolutely free.

The Free-Work Advantage: Doing free work for friends early on removes the pressure of client expectations while giving you real-world problems to solve. It is the best sandbox for a beginner.

It was messy at first, but the experience I gained was priceless. I was learning visual hierarchy, spacing, and typography without even realizing it.

The College Canvas

When I joined college, my playground got a lot bigger.

I transitioned from making small thumbnails to designing posters for college events. My confidence grew with every project, and eventually, I was trusted to design the main promotional banner for the biggest event on campus.

When my friends and seniors looked at that banner and called it "professional and modern," something shifted inside me. I had this incredible inner feeling—for a moment, I actually felt like a true pro.

"Validation from your peers is a powerful catalyst. It turns a quiet hobby into a loud calling."

The Humble Upgrade to UI

That feeling of being a "pro" was amazing, but it also woke me up.

I realized that if I wanted to keep growing, I could not just stay comfortable with static posters. Graphic design taught me aesthetics, but I wanted to understand how people interact with those visuals. I knew I had so much more to learn, so I started exploring.

That drive to upgrade myself led me straight into Product Design and Web UI. I wasn't just making things look cool anymore; I was learning how to build functional, interactive, and user-centric experiences. The transition was challenging, but all my past experience gave me a massive head start.

What drives my UI journey

  • Starting Small: Embracing those early, messy thumbnail designs gave me the courage to try new tools.
  • Embracing Feedback: The praise from my college seniors gave me the confidence to aim higher and take on complex web layouts.
  • Continuous Upgrading: Feeling like a pro is a great milestone, but realizing you will always be a student of design is the real goal.

Final Thought

Your design journey doesn't need to start with expensive courses, fancy degrees, or top-tier software. It just needs to start with curiosity.

I went from making free thumbnails to designing complex web interfaces, and every single step taught me something new. I am still upgrading my skills every single day.

This is just the next phase of my journey, and I am excited to design it.
